Earth Hour – a vote for the earth
Tuesday, 17 March 2009 15:17
On Saturday the 28th of March between 8:30-9:30pm local time, cities in 80 countries world wide will participate in the Earth Hour campaign against global warming. On March 16, 1508 cities had signed up. The organizers target of having 1000 participating cities in the campaign has really been fulfilled. And the number is still increasing.
According to the Earth Hour web page, this campaign first started in Australia in 2007. Sydney was the first city where “2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.”
This year, the goal of the Earth Hour campaign is to have 1 billion people switch off their lights as part of a global vote. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is inviting people to “VOTE EARTH” by switching off their lights for one hour on March 28. To leave your lights on is a vote for global warming. The result will be presented at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December.
