Brussels is set to be the cycling capital of 2009
by organizing the biennial European cycling conference,
Velo-city, from the 12th to the 15th
of May 2009.
Velo-city 2009 is the largest European conference devoted to cycling. The first conference was held in Bremen in 1980, and ever since it has been growing in size. The event is not only open to politicians and companies, but also to private individuals and cycling associations. More than 1,000 participants are expected to attend the conference in 2009.
The aim of the conference is to ensure that all future European transportation policies, particularly in large cities with heavy traffic, will be thought out more effective with an emphasis on the positive impact of cycling on health and the environment. Velo-city will be promoting cycling as both a fun and functional means of getting around.
Brussels considers Velo-city as a unique opportunity to highlight the city’s cycling culture. Furthermore, the Velo-city conference takes place during the “Dring Dring” Brussels’ bicycling week, organized by Pro Velo, held from the 11th to the 17th May 2009. During “Dring Dring” cycling associations will be offering the general public a wide range of activities. The week will end with a big family party on Sunday 17th of May at Tour & Taxis.
