Children on all continents plant thousands of trees on ENO planting day 22 May
Wednesday, 29 April 2009 00:00
On the 22 May, schoolchildren all over the globe
will participate in the fight against climate change and in the work towards a
more sustainable future by planting trees on all continents. The event
coincides with the United Nation’s World Biodiversity Day, and it is also a contribution to the Billion Tree
Campaign run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Last year more
than 2000 schools in 122 countries participated in the Tree Planting Day, and 300 000 trees was planted.
The planting work will be accompanied by tree planting songs and a play which can be used by the schools participating in this even. According to the organsiers, tree planting is important to them because “firstly, it reminds us of the importance of nature and environmental protection. Secondly, it is a symbol for international co-operation”.
The Tree Planting Day is organized by the Environment Online (ENO) Programme, a climate change campaign for schools, children and youth associations. The campaign was launched in Finland in 2000; it is coordinated by Pataluoto School and administered by the Department of Education in Joensuu. Today this virtual network of schools is global, and in total more than 500 schools from 104 countries are now parts of the ENO Programme.
On the ENO blog (www.enotreeday.net) you can register for the event, see photos and video clips and read about experiences from the last few years.
