MITTENS
Thumbs up — Seal the Deal!
Find a piece of warm, fluffy cloth. The pair on the website is made of an old quilt-shawl that was going to be thrown away. You can use shawls, soft quilts, fleece, or old pullovers.
The pullover will be even warmer, if you wash it in the machine with too hot water, as it will shrink.
Draw a pattern either using your hand, or print the pattern from the website. When using your hand as a model, keep the thumb extended as far to the side as you can, and leave more room around the thumb than you would leave for the hand.
When you are happy with the pattern, it’s time to cut. Fold a shawl in two, or keep the pullover flat, and cut out a left and a right hand mitten. Remember to leave 0,5-1cm extra cloth at the edges. You should end up with 4 mitten pieces. If you are not sure of the size, cut the pattern a bit bigger, and make the mitten smaller in the sewing stage.
You can sew the pieces together from the inside or outside.
If you want to hide the stitches, you put two mitten-parts together right sides against each other and sew with a simple stitch – by hand or by using a machine.
Place a Seal the Deal! badge (instruction here) at the seam close to the outer wrist. Try the mittens on, and if you need to adjust the size, make the mittens smaller by sewing in or bigger by cutting the seams and sewing a bit closer to the edge.
If you like, you can leave the seam visible, and just sew the parts together on the top. You can try the mittens and adjust the size for your hands for maximum fit.
When you are happy with the size, it’s good to finish the seams with a zigzag-stitch, a serger, or by hand. This way the mittens won’t fray.
Turn the mittens around to face the right side up, or just simply wear them as such, if you chose the option with seam on top!
