Over a hundred environment ministers from around the world are set to meet in Nairobi, Kenya, from the16-20 February for high level climate talks.
The United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) annual Governing Council meeting will focus on how reach an agreement at the United Nations Climate meeting in Copenhagen in December, but the green economy, global mercury pollution, the food crisis and the Olympic Games will also be on the agenda.
UNEP’s global headquarter is located in Nairobi and it is one of two UN agencies that have their headquarters in a development country. Speaking in Washington last week, UNEP’s Executive Director, Achim Steiner, this gives UNEP a unique world perspective. “We are confronted daily by the evidence of inextricable links between environmental degradation and poverty, unemployment and other keenly felt economic, social and ecological factors.”
UNEP is the United Nations Environmental Program and is dealing with environmental issues globally and regional. Its main aim is to analyze the global environment and bring emerging issues to governments and the international community’s attention, so they can take action where needed.
