US to spend billions on renewable energy
Tuesday, 24 March 2009 12:19
US president, Barack Obama has pledged billions of dollars on renewable energy projects as a part of his ambitious anti-crisis spending budget. The president announced 23 March that 95 billion Euros ( $129 billion) would be allocated for encouraging the use of solar power, hybrid cars and renewable energy projects.
His pledge on clean energy came as the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) made a potentially historic shift, telling the White House that global warming was endangering public health. The move will potentially lead to important measures to cut US´CO2 emissions.
Announcing his renewable energy plans, President Obama said: "We can remain the world's leader of exporting foreign oil or become the leading exporter of renewable energy ... we have known the right choice for a generation."
Clean energy entrepreneurs were present when the President made the announcement at the White House today. His declared aim is to create 300 thousand jobs, end oil dependency on imports from the Middle East as well as fighting climate change.
