One million has signed petition

Together, we are accomplishing incredible things. Today, we are announcing that over one million people, from all over the world, have pledged their support for a fair, ambitious, and binding climate deal in Copenhagen, this December.

This number is the result of something amazing, of organizations from around the world coming together to reach their supporters and the citizens of the countries they work in, to support one rallying call around the Copenhagen climate talks. People, like you, from all over the world are uniting around the call for world leaders to act on climate change.

There has been an incredible response from ordinary citizens from around the world, that they know both how important the Copenhagen climate talks will be and that we need to join together to show world leaders that the support for a fair, ambitious, and binding climate treaty is diverse, broad, and crosses borders. However, we are only able to announce that we have one million supporters due to the hard work, creative energy, and authenticity that TckTckTck partner organizations bring to bear in their communities. Organizations like Greenpeace New Zealand, whose Sign On campaign has brought together civil society leaders, celebrities, and over 109,000 ordinary citizens to call on their Prime Minister, John Key, to sign onto a strong climate target – over 2% of the entire population!

International civil society organizations, like TckTckTck partner Avaaz.org, which has signed on over 227,000 people, have come together around a common goal and it is working. This in an open campaign, and if you have signed online, consider mailing your friends and family, here, you might be surprised by the response, if it is anything like what Avaaz has gotten.

Independent climate campaigns are also showing that they are part of something bigger than any one organization or country. International aid organizations, Oxfam and Christian Aid, have reached 165,000 supporters by connecting international efforts around climate change and poverty. New partners, in the field, are coming on board, like CARE International, showing that diverse constituencies can come together in an open campaign and build a global movement to call on governments around the world to lead in Copenhagen.

Citizens in China, India, and Brazil are joining in the call and standing up to say they are ready to lead. 70,000 citizens in Brazil and almost 50,000 citizens in India signed the call for leadership on climate change in Copenhagen, demonstrating that there is the political will for action in developed and developing countries and that citizens and civil society can reach across borders to support one common goal.

If you can do it, we expect nothing less from our world leaders this fall in Copenhagen, as this is just the start of the campaign and the tip of the iceberg of the inspirational work that our partners, supporters, and civic leaders will be engaged in this fall. Time may be counting down, but we are watching the movement add up. Have you signed the pledge? It’s time.
