Carlgren: Business communities also bear responsibility for the climate

Political decisions are not enough to curb the climate threat. It requires commitment from the general public and not least from business communities, underlines Sweden's Minister for the Environment, Andreas Carlgren. Sweden holds the rotating EU Presidency in the second half of 2009.

"Political measures combined with a high level of commitment from people and the involvement of the business communities and science is characteristic for the Nordic countries. It is also part of the solution to deal with the climate challenges in the future", stresses Andreas Carlgren.

Carlgren also hopes that the Nordic model, with commitment from all parties, will provide inspiration for a global climate solution. The countries of the world are gathering in Copenhagen in December in the hope of reaching agreement on a new climate treaty.

Calrgren will be speaking at a climate conference in Stockholm on Monday 26 October. The conference is organised as part of the Nordic Council's annual Session which starts on Tuesday. Other participants apart from Carlgren include Sinikka Bohlin, the President of the Nordic Council, Johnnie Åkerholm, President of the Nordic Investment Bank and Richard H. Jones, Deputy Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, IEA. The conference is organised by the Nordic Council and the Nordic Investment Bank in collaboration with the Swedish Presidency of the European Union.
